Self-storage rooftops will become a nationwide 100MW+ solar farm

reports that the solar energy company is leasing 8.5 million square meters of rooftop space buildings for the newest solar panel project.

Commercial and community solar energy developer Solar Landscape’s new rooftop solar panel network at NSA’s 1,052 self-storage facilities and properties in 42 states and Puerto Rico is expected to generate at least 100 megawatts of solar power. Headquartered in Greenwood Village, Colorado, NSA is one of the nation’s largest self-storage operators with brands such as iStorage, Move It, Northwest and SecurCare.

These solar panels will not only generate power for the NSA’s facilities. The panels will also provide clean energy to nearby businesses and homes at a reduced cost.

One of the challenges in implementing solar energy is finding enough space for solar panels. These panels can take up a lot of space, e.g In 2019, a world-record setting solar plant covering more than 3 square miles with 3.2 million solar panels.

Sunscape and the NSA may have found an interesting solution to the space problem of solar panel projects. If successful, this partnership could inspire similar deals for other communities looking to benefit from solar technology.
