We have our first big announcement : Borderlands is back. Border areas 4 is the next entry in the franchise from Gearbox Software and 2K Games. It should arrive in 2025.
There is no gameplay in the announcement video released today. While that’s a touch disappointing, it’s not much of a surprise for a teaser trailer or a release that’s still at least a year away. (And that doesn’t mean any lag.) But the Borderlands games are known for a polished first-person shooter experience, especially in co-op, and a sharp sense of humor. Hopefully both of these features will return in full force with the new game.
What hasn’t returned is the cartoony art style that was a hallmark of the previous three titles. The teaser looks more like an advertisement for a prestigious television science fiction series than the crazy world of Borderlands. But it’s still early days, and the studio will no doubt share more updates as the game progresses through development.
Gearbox was likely hoping to ride the announcement off the wave of renewed interest in the series following this summer’s blockbuster film adaptation. But since that project a hopefully the new game will give fans of the series something new to be excited about.
