Posted by House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerry Nadler (D-NY) letter on Thursday to his committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), urging him to investigate inaccurate information about the presidential election on X (Twitter). Such is Jordan, a self-proclaimed defender of freedom of speech was persecuted mercilessly claims to be social platforms have censored conservative voices. He shouted obscenities on the platforms to get a taste of what Jordan considered censorship debunked the fake COVID conspiracies at the height of the pandemic and Donald Trump was banned for inciting a mob to attack the US Capitol January 6, 2021.
Nadler cited reports from Grok, X’s AI chatbot. Democratic nominee and vice president Kamala Harris missed deadlines is ineligible to vote in nine states. Harris has not missed any deadlines and will appear on the ballots in all 50 states.
In addition, Nadler pointed to reports that Musk’s social platform has suspended White Dudes (@dudes4harris) for Harris after it hosted an event that raised more than $4 million from more than 200,000 people for the Vice President’s campaign. The account accused him of “violating suspension evasion” due to a further unexplained “user report”. The following day, after X restored his White Dudes account, the same profile was falsely accused of “manipulating the platform” and was labeled as spam, limiting its accessibility.
Nadler also cited “prominent journalists with left-leaning accounts” who discovered that X profiles had been “accidentally” suspended.
“Given Chairman Jordan’s extensive attention this Congress to allegations of censorship on social media, Ranking Member Nadler urged Chairman Jordan to investigate this matter and continue the fight against political discrimination on platforms,” Nadler’s office wrote in the letter. “Chairman Jordan’s silence on this issue follows X’s actions on his platform to stop disinformation directed at Republican officials and not applied equally to Democratic officials.”
“In general, I don’t believe that Mr. Musk (with his expansive view of free speech) will move as quickly against false election data about liberals as he did when he targeted conservatives.”
Musk had no problem with accusations of censorship by right-wing figures. Nadler’s letter shows the platform’s swift response to false posts claiming that Musk, Trump and other far-right figures were exempt from policies banning racial slurs stemming from internal X software. The account that posted the fake photos was suspended within hours and was soon tagged with warning labels about manipulated media. X confirmed that multiple accounts have been suspended for sharing fake photos.
Where is the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in this fight? Probably sitting. “The FEC has consistently dismissed complaints against social media sites that could simply show they were enforcing their moderation rules,” said campaign funder Brett Kappel he said The Washington Post. “This will continue to be the case at X, even though the company has seriously relaxed its rules.”
“While we have serious disagreements about the degree and scope of content moderation, I hope we can at least agree that on a platform as big as X, the app is fair for both parties,” Nadler said. “At a fundamental level, platform policies should be applied equally, free from political bias.”
