A federal judge has ruled that Google illegally abused its monopoly over the search industry. The decision follows a 10-week trial in 2023, followed by a plea in 2020.
U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta wrote in his ruling that the company “acted in self-defense.” monopoly.”
The suit alleged that Google acted illegally to maintain its dominant position in search by paying Apple, Samsung and Mozilla billions of dollars a year to be the default search engine on smartphones, browsers and elsewhere. The DOJ claimed that Google is responsible for almost 90 percent of web searches.
Mehta has yet to impose any remedies on Google, but he could ask it to change how it operates or even sell part of the business. Google plans to appeal.

And it brings back the big Photos app redesign.
Apple has released its fifth developer beta, and with it comes several changes to Safari and Photos. Specifically, Apple’s browser is getting Distraction Control. It’s not a complete ad blocker, but it can be more useful for sites with video embeds, moving elements, and other chaos. In the search area (where the Reader and Viewer buttons are located), click the Page Menu button and click Hide Distractions to choose which parts of the page you want to filter. If something you choose to block, such as a header or an ad, changes in any way, it will reappear on your next visit.
Apple also used the update Something I wasn’t too keen on in my preview of the iOS beta.
Joel faces the consequences of his past.
HBO released the first teaser Our last second season. It begins with Joel (Pedro Pascal) having a conversation with a new character played by Catherine O’Hara (ostensibly his therapist), coming to terms with his past actions. It will be released in 2025.
And a cartoon horse to ride.
