Google just announced an update to the Nest Learning Thermostat next week’s Made by Google event. The fourth generation smart thermostat completely redesigned with a new form factor and many updated features.
60 percent larger than those found with LCD displays (now ancient) third generation, with a curved front that eliminates the appearance of frames. Basically, everything is now a screen, with no giant black plastic loop outside. This brings us to another new feature. The larger screen allows for more customization, as the fourth-generation Nest offers customizable faces. It works just like smartwatches do. You can change the clock face, change the colors or change the background to something artistic.
No matter which face you choose, the UI automatically adjusts what’s displayed on the screen based on how far you’re standing from the thermostat. For example, as you step back, the font will become larger. All this is thanks to the integrated Soli radar sensors.
As for the actual inner workings of the thermostat, the new Nest uses artificial intelligence for more accurate readings and suggests potential actions to save on your monthly energy bill. It will even activate itself depending on the ambient temperature and other factors. The thermostat also comes with a wireless temperature sensor that you can place anywhere. This is useful when trying to eliminate cold spots or find a perfect average temperature throughout the house. Google says this wireless device can last three years before requiring a battery change. You can buy these separately, as each Nest integrates with six sensors.
The device has some environmental protection. The internal battery is made entirely of recycled cobalt and the packaging is plastic-free. Pre-orders for the new Nest Learning Thermostat are now open, with shipping starting August 20th. It is available in three colors including silver, black and gold. Each thermostat costs $280, with additional temperature sensors for $40 or $100 for a three-pack.
