National Geographic is no stranger to new media. The network produced a large number immersive virtual reality experiences, 360 degree videoand even his “Space Projection Helmets” for his big-budget show A strange rock. Today, it finally unveils its first immersive experience for Apple Vision Pro: a Disney+ environment featuring Iceland’s Thingvellir National Park. Now you can sit back and watch The Avengers in 3D between pure white snow, towering rock formations and clear blue skies (or starry night). Along with this movie, Disney+ also adds 3D versions The Age of Ultron and the first two Ant-Man movies today.
While standing in the middle of a snow-filled park isn’t quite as adventurous as, say, kayaking through Arctic waters in VR, the environment shows Nat Geo’s complete disregard for Vision Pro. Apple’s headsets lacked truly immersive experiences, aside from the “Dinosaur Encounters” demo it sent. What if Marvel does…?
I’m not holding my breath for a big-budget National Geographic experience exclusive to Vision Pro, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Nat Geo can reconfigure some of its existing VR projects to run on and even adapt to Vision Pro. A strange rock unique helmet projection view. (I’d bet money that very few people saw the footage in this form.)
