In this installment of We’re Listening, Engadget’s Weekend Editor Cheyenne MacDonald shares some of her favorite recent music releases.
Francesca Wexler – I dreamed I found a red ruby
Once in a while, the “algorithm” actually works correctly on my part. Scrolling through my Instagram feed over the past month, a suggested reel by artist Francesca Wexler popped up and I couldn’t help but be drawn into its seductive flow. It’s not easy to pin his style down to a single genre, but it fits under the umbrella of sub-hip-hop – he’s described his work as “psychedelic rap” in one instance.
Some songs on Wexler’s latest album, I dreamed I found a red ruby, have an almost ethereal quality to them, such as the opening and closing tracks, “Heaven on Earth” and “Walking on the Moon.” Upbeat and catchy, “I’m Not” sounds like a sunny day. But songs like “Amphetamine Man” have darker, harder moments that really showcase Wexler’s depth as a rapper. with I dreamed I found a Red Ruby, It is clear that Wexler is an artist who cannot sleep.
Orville Peck – the crowd
After releasing Orville Peck, he didn’t make us wait long for a full album The Crowd: Volume 1 in may On Friday, the country artist dropped his duet album in its entirety, and even though it’s been less than three days since its release, I can already tell it’s going to be dominating my Most Played playlists for the foreseeable future.
the crowd Beijing sees collaborations with both country legends and up-and-coming artists, and genre-wise it has a little bit of everything. On the songs I he shouted from the first halfthe rest the crowd It brings many new bangers like “Back At Your Door” with Debbie Dawson, “Papa Was Rodeo” with Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway, and “You’re a Badass, I Can’t Stand You (And Me)”. Dear Note:
Street Cleaner — I recently started looking for music that sounded like it came out of an 80s horror/thriller movie, and Reddit pointed me to Street Cleaner. Well, let me tell you, I was not disappointed. Street Cleaner, whose style is described on Bandcamp as “a furious take on theater and synth music,” has become my go-to artist when I need to wind down or otherwise shut down.
There’s no particular song or album that I’m hooked on – I just throw on the whole discography and let it get me into the zone. Street Cleaner released some new music in April though and it’s the best place to start your listening journey. Apparently, the artist did too video gameI absolutely plan to check it out.
