Google has rolled out updates to Search with the intention of making it as difficult as possible to spot obvious deep fakes. As part of it for a long timeg and the company’s ongoing fight against manipulated images that look real, makes it easy for people to get unofficial fake images removed from Search.
It has long been possible for users withdrawal request of such images in accordance with Google policies. Now, when you grant a removal request for someone, Google will also filter out all obvious results in similar searches about them. The company’s systems will scan for any duplicates of the offending image and delete them as well. This update may help alleviate some of the victim’s fears if they are worried about the same image appearing again on other websites.
In addition, Google has updated its ranking systems so that if a user specifically searches for obvious in-depth fakes by a person’s name, the results will show “high-quality, non-obvious content” instead. For example, if there are news about that person, then the results will include them. According to Google’s announcement, it also appears to have plans to educate users looking for deep fakes by showing them results that discuss their impact on society.
Google is reluctant to remove results from its results page for legitimate content, such as an actor’s nude scene. He admits he still has a long way to go to separate the legitimate from the fake candids. While it’s still a work in progress, one of the solutions he’s implemented is to demote sites with a high volume of scraps for manipulated images in Search. This is “a pretty strong signal that it’s not a high-quality site,” Google explains, adding that this approach has worked well for other types of malicious content in the past.
