The Bioshock movie is still happening but with a reduced budget

We don’t have it Netflix had an update Bioshock movie after a few years, leading some to wonder if it was quietly canned. The good news? The movie is still coming. The (potential) bad news? The budget was cut. according to a report by Diversity.

It comes from producer Roy Lee, one of the guys behind it The Lego Movie. He revealed the reduced budget during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. He didn’t reveal any numbers, but said the film is currently being “reconfigured” to be a “more personal” film. Directed by Francis Lawrence still leads the picture. He directed four of the five Hunger Games films I am Legend and original Constantine.

The Bioshock the film was first announced in 2022, but since then Netflix has experienced a regime change at the executive level. Dan Lin replaced Scott Stuber as the broadcaster’s head of film, and Lin pulled the purse strings away from things like. Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon.

“The new regime has cut budgets,” Lee said at Comic-Con. “So we’re doing a smaller version.”

Along with the budget cuts, Lee noted that Netflix has changed its compensation strategy for movies. It is moving to a more traditional model based on bonuses based on actual follower count.

This may actually be good news. In my opinion, personal stories work better than constant CGI battles with hordes of faceless villains. Bioshock it’s also a personal story about family at its heart, the fantastical Rapture setting being window dressing.

I think it ultimately depends on how much that budget is cut. There’s a big difference between a slightly reduced budget and a massive cut that turns all the footage into dark hallway scenes shot in warehouses in Toronto or Atlanta. A release date has not been announced, and to be honest, it could still be a ways off. Directed by Lawrence he has a lot on his plate right nowincluding the Stephen King adaptation Long Walk and another Hunger Games movie.
