OpenAI has announced a new AI-powered search engine prototype called SearchGPT. It is described SearchGPT As “a temporary prototype of new AI search features that give you fast and timely responses with clear and relevant sources.” The company plans to test the product with 10,000 initial users, then host it on ChatGPT after gathering feedback.
It’s a spicy time to launch AI-powered search engines. Last month, Perplexity faced criticism for generalizing the stories Forbes and Wired without adequate attribution or links back to publications. It also ignored robots.txt, a way for websites to tell crawlers to back off data. Earlier this week Wired Publisher Condé Nast has reportedly sent Perplexity a cease-and-desist letter accusing it of plagiarism. See also: earlier this week.
SearchGPT categorizes its results with short descriptions and visuals, but according to some early users, like its chatbot ancestors, precision is… lacking.

Google is making Gemini AI faster and more efficient around the world. Plugging the same names into Runway’s older Gen-2 model, which was trained before the alleged data in the spreadsheets, produced “unrelated” results.
