Engadget’s Sam Rutherford gave away the Pixel 8a 90 points in his opinion. Like past A-series devices, it gets most of the headline features from last year’s flagship Pixel phone — Pixel 8 in this case — and puts them in a slightly cheaper design. You still get a bright and vibrant OLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, excellent camera performance and enough battery life for a typical day. It runs on the same Tensor G3 chip and 8GB of RAM, which means it can get warm under heavy load, but it can handle almost any task. The stock software is just as clean, and Google promises it seven years OS and security updates. It’s here, including a few useful AI features from the standard Pixel 8 Magic Eraser A tool that allows you to remove unwanted objects from photos.

This device is a few months old, but it offers faster wired and wireless charging speeds, slimmer bezels, and slightly better photo quality, especially in dark settings and zoomed-in shots. It has a glass back rather than a matte plastic one, plus the screen is slightly larger (6.2 inches by 6.1 inches). It’s currently on sale for $549 for the 128GB model or $609 for the single model 256GB one. If you really want to save an extra $100, the Pixel 8a isn’t far behind. And if money is no object, remember that Google is already confirmed it’s new Pixel 9 devices will come next month.
