Adobe’s Photoshop can now generate AI images via prompts like Dall-E or Midjourney

Adobe has widely released a new and potentially controversial feature: text-to-image generation for Photoshop, powered by Firefly. it was first sold in April. As with LLMs like Dall-E and Midjourney, you can use Photoshop to create an image from scratch by typing an image into Photoshop’s updated generative AI tool.

I tried it in many styles (anime, watercolor, sketch, realistic) with the text “Dramatic low angle view of a steamship in a storm with big waves and lightning from the 1800s” and got decent results. The usual AI art caveats are applied in strange detail, especially if you look closely. But it certainly produced useful results, and there’s the benefit of already being in Photoshop to fix any mistakes.

Previously, Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature only allowed you to add, expand, or delete certain parts of an image. Now you can create images from scratch and then tweak them. “It really speeds up the build time,” Adobe’s Erin Boyce told Engadget in April. “The thought of putting something from your mind onto canvas has never been easier.”

The feature, powered by Firefly Image 3, was recently at the center of an artist backlash against Adobe. Developers were outraged by Adobe’s recently released ToS (terms of service) language, which they interpreted as Adobe being free to use their work to train the company’s generative artificial intelligence models.

However, in its latest post, Adobe expressed its “commitment to creator-friendly AI,” which means “never training on customer content.” He promised to treat creators accordingly as part of the AI ethical principles of accountability, responsibility and transparency.

For Illustrator, it introduced Generative Shape Fill for adding detailed vectors in a designer’s unique style (above), Enhanced Text to Pattern (creating customized vector patterns in an artists’ style), and Style Reference. It also includes “high-quality visual prototypes of art on objects such as product packaging,” improved selection capabilities, and more. Added Mockup tool to create.
