The age of the retro CD player is here


The mines of technology nostalgia are relentless. Earlier this week saw the unofficial return of the iPod, not to mention Tamagotchis and now the Discman. Well, the portable CD player, not the real Sony-branded Discman, is back.

Audiophile brand FiiO has introduced the DM13, a portable CD player with modern touches like high-quality wireless and a built-in battery. No more AA! The CD Player will be available in September for $179 (£179 in the UK). It’s only starting to ship in silver, but FiiO says red, blue, titanium, and black options will arrive later in the year—just enough time to find my NOW compilation CDs folder.

Can’t access Outlook this morning? You are not alone. Microsoft also has problems with Azure services and the Microsoft 365 software suite. Then, a botched update from security giant CrowdStrike forced computers and servers into an unrecoverable boot loop. The issue forced Delta, Frontier and other airlines to ground flights and affected the UK’s London Stock Exchange and broadcaster Sky.

“We have had widespread reports of BSODs on Windows hosts occurring on multiple sensor versions,” wrote CrowdStrike in a pinned Reddit post. “[We have] identified the content deployment related to this issue and reverted those changes.” It’s a great Friday morning for everyone involved.

Apple has launched public betas on all of its platforms, and while you’ll have to wait for an official release in the fall, many features are stable enough for most people to play with. While I was all about iOS 18, there was one big omission: Apple Intelligence.

Back in 2013, Microsoft decided to create a live-action Halo television series when Halo was one of the biggest gaming properties in the world. It took nearly a decade for that to happen, but only two years for Paramount+ to pull it off — and series.
