A nifty hack made Mario a playable character in 1994’s Donkey Kong Country


Mario and Donkey Kong have been rivals, frenemies, go-kart rivals and tennis partners. An Italian plumber once kidnapped Donkey Kong’s son. DK once, uh, took over Mario’s toy company (?) And for some reason. They have history. What they don’t do is appear as playable characters in each other’s platforming adventures. Thanks to a little hacking, that just changed.

Mario is a playable character Donkey Kong Country, thanks to a ROM programmer named RainbowSprinklez. It’s appropriately named DKC X Mario, and it’s no simple sprite swap. We wouldn’t waste your time with that. Mario had to be completely adapted into the game, as his moveset is missing from the original code. Donkey Kong is a lumberjack. He doesn’t spin around, double jump, or carry items. Watch the video and prepare to be amazed.

This is a drawn Mario Super Mario World, both sprite and control related. There are mushrooms to grow it, burning flowers and of course everyone’s favorite dino-thingie Yoshi. Otherwise, this Donkey Kong Country. The levels are the same. The enemies are the same, mainly consisting of King K. Rul and his Kremling army. If you’re really familiar with the layout of the original DKC, this could be a way to breathe new life into an ancient platformer.

The music will also be changed, replacing the original tracks with songs from the Mario, Zelda and Mega Man games.
