Meta may hold back its next-gen AI models from the EU

Meta has reportedly decided not to release the upcoming multimodal AI model and future versions to customers In the European Union, citing European regulators’ lack of clarity on data protection rules. These new AI models process not only text, but also images and audio, and enhance AI capabilities on Meta platforms. Meta’s move follows a similar decision by Apple, which recently announced that it would not release its Intelligence features in Europe due to regulatory concerns.

Meta said Axios still plans to release the company’s text-only model, the Llama 3, in the EU. The company’s main concern stems from difficulties in training AI models using data from European customers while complying with the EU’s data protection law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). However, Meta still plans to introduce these new AI models in the UK, which has similar data protection laws to the EU.
