Everything Samsung revealed at Galaxy Unpacked 2024


Samsung didn’t have many surprises (thanks, leaks!). , live in Paris with satellite events in New York, London and elsewhere. The big announcement was Samsung’s introduction to a new kind of wearable smart ring.

Samsung claims that it has been able to cram existing sensor technology inside smaller form factor. Made of titanium, it packs in accelerometer and PPG sensors to measure blood flow and detect skin temperature. It can track metrics like sleep score, movement during sleep, heart rate, breathing rate, and menstrual cycles. Note that a subscription is not required to access all tracking and metrics. Then there are folding ones. This year, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is most notable for its improved camera sensors (50-megapixel wide-angle and 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensors), which puts the smaller foldable on par with the S24. There is also a larger battery.

At the same time, the Z Fold 6 lacks many key features (the annual note is that the screens are tougher and both foldables have improved hinges). Both devices come with the Translator app, which uses both the main and overlay screens to change translations and simplify communications. There are also more generative AI tricks.

X has faced many legal battles since Elon Musk took over. One lawsuit concerns more than 6,000 workers who were laid off after Musk bought the company, complaining that they were not given full severance pay. Employer X won a motion to dismiss the class action.

Judge Thompson found that Twitter’s layoff plan did not comply with the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) because employees received notice of a separate pay scheme before being laid off. It ruled that the severance program enacted after Musk took over was extended to those former employees. Thompson’s order noted that plaintiffs may amend their complaints for non-ERISA claims.

Amazon says it now gets all of its energy from clean energy sources, seven years ahead of schedule. The company’s claim to achieving 100 percent clean electricity is based in part on billion-dollar investments in more than 500 solar and wind initiatives. The company’s rationale is that the energy generated by these projects is equivalent to the electricity consumed by its data centers. However, this energy goes to the public grid, not to Amazon-owned power outlets.

Xbox is raising the price of Game Pass again. From July 10, new subscribers will pay the updated price, while current subscribers will see the higher costs come into effect from September 12. For the US, Game Pass Ultimate prices will increase from $17 per month to $20 per month, while access to Game Pass Core will increase from $60 to $75 per month. Xbox Game Pass Standard is a new addition for $15 per month. This plan offers access to Game Pass titles, but without access to Microsoft-owned titles or one-day releases to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What happened to Game Pass? It was a big deal – and it still is, but Microsoft is getting more and more confusing.
