The best deals to shop ahead of Prime Day and everything to know about the sale in July


This year Amazon Prime Day is coming soon, so once the wave of deals hits, it’s a good time to start thinking about what you want to look for. Everything from gadgets to clothes to homewares will be on sale during the event and if you Senior member, you will get access to all the deals. Engadget will feature all the best technology deals we can find both on Amazon and elsewhere, but there are some important things you should know in advance so that you can get exactly what you want from this year’s Prime Day.

We don’t have official dates for Prime Day 2024 yet, but we know it’s coming back sometime in July. The shopping event focuses on deals exclusive to Prime members, which means you’ll need to be a Prime subscriber on Prime Day to take advantage of most of the savings. Amazon still offers it 30 day free trial for new Prime subscribers, so you can start your free trial before July and participate in the event.

If you don’t pay for Prime and don’t intend to, you should still check Amazon on Prime Day for sales available to all shoppers — there’s always a few of them. Plus, it’s likely that other retailers like it, too Target and Best Buy will also have their own competitive Prime Day sales during that time.

Speaking of competitors, only Walmart announced The Prime Day version, dubbed Walmart+ Week, will run from June 17 to June 23. Walmart+ Week offers exclusive deals. Walmart+ members and the retail giant is focusing heavily on gas and travel discounts this year. It currently offers 20 cents back on every gallon of gas purchased at Exxon and Mobil stations, as well as 20 percent Walmart Cash back on travel spots purchased through Walmart+ Travel. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see discounts on other products, including electronics, during Walmart’s members-only shopping event.

It’s best to go into Amazon Prime Day as prepared as possible; it means knowing exactly what you want so that you are focused and not distracted. The entire Amazon site will be big on Prime Day, so the less time you spend aimlessly browsing, the more your wallet will thank you later.

One thing you can do to stay on track during Prime Day is to make a list of your best items before the event. It takes a bit of prep work, but you’ll be thankful you did once the event arrives. List the most important items you want to buy on the Big Day. You can either do this the old fashioned way on sticky paper, or you can use Amazon’s wish list feature. For the latter, add the items you want to buy on Prime Day to a wish list (or better yet, create a custom wish list with just your Prime Day wishes) and refer back to that list when shopping. Not only will you get everything you want in one place, but you’ll also be able to see which items are cheaper than when you first added them to your list.

You can check price history charts and get price drop alerts by getting emails when something you want goes on sale. In our experience, only a few of these flash sales are actually worth your money, but if you see something on your wishlist drop in price in just a few hours, it’s in your best interest to grab it right away.
