OpenAI’s revenue is reportedly booming

We don’t know if OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has actually made any money yet. But thank goodness for Wednesday report in Informationwhat we do know is that the company doubled its annual revenue in the past six months — the size of the previous month’s revenue multiplied by 12, as the publication helpfully explains.

OpenAI’s annual revenue was $3.4 billion, CEO Sam Altman told employees. That’s up from $1.6 billion at the end of last year and up from $1 billion a year earlier. Most of that revenue came from the subscription version of ChatGPT, which offers higher messaging limits to people who pay at least $20 a month, as well as from developers who pay the company to use the company’s large language models in their apps and services. On an annual basis, about $200 million comes from Microsoft, which cuts OpenAI’s sales of large language models to customers using Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform aimed at businesses.

It should be noted that the spokesperson of OpenAI said Information said the financial information was “inaccurate” but did not say what details it disputed. OpenAI did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment.

Earlier this week, Apple announced Collaboration with OpenAI. The company plans to plug ChatGPT directly into its operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers, allowing Siri to interact with ChatGPT to answer questions. However, the financial terms of this contract are still unknown.
