Apple may integrate Google’s Gemini AI into iOS in the future

Apple does integrates GPT-4o, the large language model that powers ChatGPT in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and MacOS Sequioa thanks to a partnership with OpenAI, was announced Monday at WWDC, the company’s annual developer conference. But shortly after the keynote ended, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, said the company might also build Gemini, Google’s big language model, into its operating systems.

“We want to ultimately give users the ability to choose the models they want, maybe Google Gemini in the future,” Federighi told reporters after the keynote. “Nothing to announce at this time.”

The news is notable because while Apple mentioned plans to add more AI models to its operating system in its keynote, it didn’t specifically mention Gemini. Allowing people to choose the AI model they want on their device would give Apple devices a level of customization that none of its competitors like Google or Samsung have.
