After its reputation went up in flames, Humane warns users its charging case may too

The wave is huge negative reviews If that wasn’t enough, it looks like Humane has discovered another major problem with its once hyped AI Pin. The company is warning customers not to use the device’s charging case due to a potential “fire safety risk.”

In an email to AI Pin owners, the company said it had received reports of a “charging issue” that caused “a quality issue with the third-party vendor-supplied battery cell used in your charging case accessory.” Humane did not make it clear whether the unspecified “charging issue” caused the actual fire, but said the investigation found “some battery cells supplied by this vendor may pose a fire safety risk.”

Although Humane hasn’t used the word “recall” yet, the company advises people to use the charging case immediately. Other charging accessories, including the battery booster and charging block, are probably safe because their batteries come from different suppliers. We’ve reached out to Humane for more information and to see if they have plans to offer refunds or exchanges for people who have already purchased the $149 accessory. Meanwhile, the company offers customers two months of subscription service for free.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are asking you today to immediately stop using and charging your Charging Case accessory due to an issue with certain battery cells for the Charging Case accessory.

After receiving a report of a charging problem when using a third-party USB-C cable and third-party power source, we identified a quality issue with the third-party vendor-supplied battery cell used in your Charging Case accessory.

Our investigation has determined that the battery supplier no longer meets our quality standards and that some of the battery cells supplied by this vendor have the potential to pose a fire safety risk. As a result, we immediately disqualified this battery vendor while we try to identify a new supplier to avoid such problems and maintain our high quality standards.

The identified issue only applies to certain battery cells used in the Charging Case accessory and is not related to the hardware design of the Charging Case accessory.

Importantly, Humane’s Ai Pin, its Battery Booster(s) and Charging Pad are not affected, as the disqualified vendor does not provide batteries or any other components of those Humane products that are safe for continued use.
