All the rage Leica has decided to get back in the game for influencers with small and stylish compact cameras like Fujifilm’s X100 VI. The German brand recently introduced $1595 D-Lux 8continuation D-Lux 7 Released in 2018. Although substantially revised from the last model, it carries the same 17-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor and 24-75mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.7-2.8 lens.
The original was actually a rebadge Panasonic LX100 II, but it’s not clear if the D-Lux 8 uses the same sensor or an updated version. Other features like video, autofocus and more are yet to be announced.
From the released images, we can see some significant differences from the previous model. It has an all-black finish, just like Leica’s full-frame Q3 compact. The interface is also simplified, with only “game”, “menu” and d-pad-style controls on the back, along with two unlabeled buttons. At the top, in place of the “4K” button, is the power switch. All this is inspired by the Q series, the company said.
The new camera supports RAW file shooting, a first for the D-lux series. Leica also introduced new accessories, including carrying straps, leather protectors, flash and hand grip. It also showed off a new app without saying exactly what it does.
It would be a little disappointing if the D-Lux 8 was just an upgraded version of the D-Lux 7 released to capitalize on the compact camera trend created by Fujifilm’s X100 series. The older model was a solid camera for its time, but offers contrast-detection instead of phase-detection autofocus, along with photo and video features up to today’s standards.
It certainly looks good, and it’s been a staple of the compact camera renaissance – and accessories can also tempt style-conscious shooters. For those drawn to Leica’s storied history and that iconic red dot, $1595 is the low price whom you will see sometime for a brand new camera.
