While Google and OpenAI have been vying for the artificial intelligence crown over the past year, we’ve shied away from talking to virtual assistants. Generative AI products typically start with text inputs only and only later add the ability to search images and basic voice commands. Today at Google I/O, the company unveiled Gemini Live, a new mobile experience for natural conversations with artificial intelligence.
Google suggested several potential use cases; You can chat with Gemini Live to help you prepare for a job interview, where she can ask you relevant questions around the position. She can also give you tips on public speaking if you want to brush up on your speech. What makes Gemini Live unique is that you can speak at your own pace or even interrupt his responses if you wish. Ideally, it should be like having a conversation with a human, rather than just voicing intelligent assistant commands or generative AI queries.
In I/O, Google also showed off Project Astra, a next-generation virtual assistant that takes the Gemini Live concept even further. Astra can view your camera feed and answer questions in real time. It’s unclear how long that will take, but Google says some of the Astra’s live video features will come to Gemini Live later this year. Gemini Live will be available to Gemini Advanced subscribers in the next few months.
