Google’s Gemini AI can do many things according to systems today’s I/O main output. This includes the option to set up a virtual teammate with your own Workspace account. You can configure a teammate to perform specific tasks such as tracking and monitoring projects, organizing data, providing context, identifying trends after analyzing data, and playing a role in team collaboration.
In Google Chat, a teammate can join all relevant rooms, and you can ask them questions based on all their chat history, Gmail threads, and anything else they might have access to. It can tell team members if their project is approved or if there is a problem based on conflicting messages.
It looks like the virtual teammate was just a tech demo for now. Aparna Pappu, vice president and CEO of Workspace, said Google has “a lot of work to do to figure out how to bring these agent experiences like virtual teammates to Workspace.” This includes finding ways to allow third parties to create their own versions.
While it doesn’t look like this virtual teammate will be available anytime soon, it can ultimately be a serious time saver — as long as you trust in getting it right the first time.
