Senate Approved A measure that would require ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban passed by 79 votes to 18. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Enemy Surveillance Act is next headed to President Biden. The president has already said that he will sign the draft law. TikTok has faced the ire of US politicians for several years now, but this bill has gained support in both political parties. It passed the House (along with the foreign aid package) before being confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday.
The bill says TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, will be given up to 12 months to withdraw or face a ban from US app stores and web hosting services. The company, of course, objected to the push, calling the bill unconstitutional and vowing to file a legal challenge if the bill is signed into law. If it does, the company will bounce around the courts for years before any ban can be imposed if it refuses to sell. A few years is a long time in social media. Ask Snap, or worse, Vine.
So who will buy TikTok? While many big tech companies love to tap into the social network’s engaged young audience, many politicians are reluctant to push Big Tech any further. Steve Mnuchin, the Trump administration’s treasury secretary, told CNBC that he is creating the investor group. What could be wrong?

Microsoft has introduced its latest lightweight AI model for smartphones and other native devices called Phi-3 Mini. The goal is to provide a cheaper alternative to large cloud-based language models (LLMs), allowing smaller organizations to implement AI, possibly with less power overhead and without high processing costs. According to Microsoft, the new model easily surpasses the previous smaller Phi-2 model and is on par with larger models such as the Llama 2. In fact, the company says the Phi-3 Mini delivers close to the level of a model 10 times its size. . The trick, it seems, is in the data Microsoft uses to train its tiny model.
This feature will be available in the Tesla app “in the future.”
Tesla marketed the ride-hailing features coming to its app ahead of its robotaxin launch in August. The company released mockups of the upcoming feature, which showed off the ability to “call” a ride from the Tesla app. The company promises self-driving taxi services . Tesla didn’t offer many details, but it appears to have Uber-like functionality and the ability to remotely set the car’s temperature before arriving.

You may have seen feature showcases of AI-enabled devices that can see what a device is looking at and offer additional information.
