Ahead of the robotaxin’s launch in August, Tesla previewed the upcoming ride-hailing feature on its app. The company released mockups of the upcoming feature, which showed off the ability to “call” a ride from the Tesla app.
The company didn’t provide many details on how it will work, but images show Uber-like functionality, including the ability to remotely set the car’s temperature prior to its arrival. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the company earlier this month would open his long-promised robot August 8.
Tesla promises a self-driving service for years, with Musk promising that the company’s robot taxi will start picking up drivers again in 2019. It is not yet clear when exactly such a service will be launched. “We are currently working on a driving feature that will be available in the future,” the company said in a recent statement income statement. “We believe the Tesla software experience is the best across all of our products, and we plan to seamlessly integrate it into the Tesla App.”
The update was shared in Tesla’s Q1 2024 earnings report. The car manufacturer reported a 9 percent decrease in revenue compared to last year. the most severe loss in more than a decade.
During a call with investors, Musk suggested that the ride-hailing service, which he called CyberCab, would act as “some combination of Airbnb and Uber,” so that Tesla owners could make their cars part of the service. “Tesla will have a few cars that it owns and operates in the fleet,” Musk said. “There will be cars owned by an end user, but that end user can add or remove cars from the fleet whenever they want. And they can decide if they want to allow the car to be used only by friends and family, or only by five-star users, or by anyone.
