The US House of Representatives on Saturday passed a bill that would ban or force the sale of TikTok in the country. A revised version of the bill, which was previously passed by the House in March but then stalled in the Senate, this time combined with a foreign aid package, is likely now should be considered a higher priority item. The bill originally gave TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, six months to sell the app or it would be banned from US app stores. Under the revised version, ByteDance would have up to a year to opt out.
The bill was passed in the House of Representatives by 360 to 58 votes AP. It will now go to the Senate, where it could be voted on a few days from now. There is President Joe Biden previously stated that he would support the bill If Congress passes. The bill describes TikTok as a national security threat due to its ties to China. The app has at least 170 million US users TikTokand ByteDance isn’t expected to let them down without a fight.
