Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson had a difficult performance last night Shooting 0 for 10 Losing against the Sacramento Kings ended the team’s chances of making the NBA playoffs. But then, almost to add insult to injury, X’s AI bot Grok He claimed that Thompson destroyed houses in the area with bricks.
Now at this point, even casual basketball fans can see what went wrong. But Grok is not very smart, because it seems that after seeing the user’s posts about a player, he simply (aka throwing brick), the bot took things literally, resulting in a completely fictitious AI-generated report.
If this hoax, the #5 trending story at the time of writing, is being corrected or deleted by Elon Musk, Grok originally wrote: “In a strange turn of events, NBA star Klay Thompson has been accused of destroying several homes. Brick in Sacramento. Authorities are investigating the claims after several people reported their homes were damaged and windows were broken with bricks. Klay Thompson has yet to comment on the charges. The events shocked the community, but no one was injured. The motive for the alleged vandalism is still unclear.” Amusingly, despite Grok’s focus on the unusual nature of the story, he revealed some nonsense anyway.
That’s right, in the fine print below the story, X says: “Grok is an early feature and can make mistakes. Check out his speeches.” Even that warning backfired as basketball fans began memeing the AI with posts mockingly endorsing the AI’s misstatement.
To most people, Grok’s latest gaffe may just be another example in an ongoing early streak . But for others, like Musk, who believe that AI will be smarter than humans it should be a reminder that AI is still in dire need of regular fact-checking.
