xAI’s Grok chatbot will be the Elon Musk-led company’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. is available to X Premium subscribers later this week. Musk announced Grok’s expanded availability in a tweet, along with a video tutorial on how to embed a conversation with the chatbot directly on the X website. Grok has been available to X’s Premium+ subscribers since it came out of early beta, but the social network’s paid tier costs $16 a month when paid annually, or $168 for an entire year. This release makes the Grok a little more affordable, with half of the Premium tier costing $8 per month or $84 per year.
Musk’s xAI is open source Grok-1 model that powers the chatbot, mid-March. Just a few weeks ago, the chief executive OpenAI and sued Sam Altman, accusing them of pursuing profit and abandoning their non-profit mission. Musk was one of OpenAI’s early backers and funded its operations when it was just starting out. In his lawsuit, he claimed that OpenAI developed generative artificial intelligence “to maximize profits for Microsoft, not for the benefit of humanity.” According to him, this is “a sharp betrayal of the Founding Agreement”.
But a denies his claims, OpenAI said it has “no Founding Agreement or any agreement with Musk” to open its technology. The company said that Musk not only knew that he would be moving to a commercial organization, but also participates in planning and initially wanted majority equity, control of the initial board of directors, and the position of CEO.
