The device is of course centered around health and wellness and will be available in three colors, platinum silver, gold and ceramic black. It will go on sale at the end of this year.
Samsung didn’t say much about the Galaxy Ring for the first time rendered of the device in Unpacked last month. All we knew at the time was that it would be a health-focused wearable that would rival the Oura, and it would have an undisclosed set of sensors.
Reporters weren’t allowed to photograph it today, but some additional images from Samsung show it to be a chunky, concave ring about the same size as the Oura, according to the image provided (below). Given the electronics cached inside, the extra girth isn’t surprising.
still, The Verge noted that it’s lighter than expected and will be offered in sizes 5 to 13, marked S to XL inside the band. Battery size (and thus time between charges) varies between 14.5 mAh and 21.5 mAh, depending on size. Battery life is unknown, but the Oura can go up to seven days between charges.
Vice President of Samsung Dr. According to Hon Pak’s blog, the ring will track sleep based on heart rate, movement and breathing, and then give advice to users based on that. The company will also get data from partner Natural Cycles, which runs productivity tracking on the Galaxy Watch under the flagship Oura feature.
The Galaxy Ring will also introduce a new tool called My Vitality Score, which measures alertness so users can see if they’re at their best. Feedback will be available through “Booster Cards,” which offer science-based advice using sleep and other data collected by the device.
The Galaxy Ring will be part of the Samsung Health ecosystem and will be compatible with the Galaxy Watch. This means you will be able to use both devices at the same time to track your health and ultimately get better quality data. That said, the advantage of a wearable ring is that sleeping with it is less annoying.
We’ll learn more in the coming months, including the exact sensor kit, price and release date. The Galaxy Ring will only be compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones, although the company plans to work with other Android devices later. iOS compatibility is still to be determined, Pak said.
